Environment ownership (read before pinning a version)

Section titled “Environment ownership (read before pinning a version)”

An image’s pixi environment belongs to whichever candy ships the pixi.toml it is built from — usually the top consumer, not this layer. So the package pin above is this layer’s default, not a property of every image that composes it: an image whose own pixi.toml pins a different minor gets that interpreter.

Because of that, the candy’s checks assert what the layer actually guarantees — a working CPython at or above the supported floor of 3.11, proven by running real standard-library code (including the sqlite3 C extension) through it — rather than one exact minor. An image that needs a specific version should assert it in its own plan:. The concrete case that forced this: open-webui (and so the openwebui candy) requires >=3.11,<3.13, so it legitimately runs 3.12 and a hard-coded 3.13 assertion redded its whole check bed (opencharly/layer-python#8).

candy:
- python
  • Transitive dependency via supervisord in most service boxes (openclaw, jupyter, ollama, comfyui, immich, etc.)

Use when the user asks about:

  • Python runtime in containers
  • Pixi-managed Python installation
  • The python candy
  • Why pip install and conda install are not used (pixi is the only Python package manager)
  • /charly-image:layer — candy authoring reference (charly.yml schema, task verbs, service declarations)
  • /charly-check:check — declarative testing (check: block, charly check box, charly check live)
